Manchester Essex Regional Middle School – Mr. Durfee
PURPOSE
The
purpose of this course is to develop competence in: physical fitness, locomotor
and non-locomotor skills, participation skills, social behavior, and strategies
for physical activities.
GOALS
1. The student will be able to
demonstrate competency in many movement forms and several forms of physical
activity.
2. The student will apply concepts
and principles of human movement to the development of motor skills.
3. The student will achieve and
maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
4. The student will demonstrate
responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity.
5. The student will understand that
physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge and
self-expression.
CLASS RULES
Students are expected to
conduct themselves in a manner that will help promote a safe and fun learning
environment. Students can achieve this by following my five rules:
1. Press the Reset Button (otherwise known as let go and move on). This means that
students come to class and leave all negative emotions at the door. Today is a
new day, make the most of it.
2.
Be Respectful. This extends to
respecting the equipment, fellow students, themselves, as well as the teacher.
3. Be Safe. This includes physical, emotional, and social safety. Emotional
safety refers to providing an environment free from insults and bullying. Social
safety refers to including and making others feel welcome.
4. Try Your Best. Everyone has a different best. No matter your skill level,
attitude toward the learning activity, or who you are working with try your
best.
5. Have Fun. The best classes are the ones you enjoy and have fun in. I seek to have that occur for everyone in
every class, but not at the expense of others.
CONSEQUENCES
1st
Offense - 1st warning
2nd
Offense - 2nd warning
3rd
Offense - Written assignment and/or parent contact.
4th
Offense - Detention (in my office only on Thursdays) and note sent home
ABSENCES
If
a student has an excused absence they do not have to make up the missed class.
If a student has an unexcused absence he/she will be required to submit a written
summary of a newspaper or magazine article for each day of absence. The
articles are to be on any sport, health or fitness topic. Students have up to
one week to complete and hand in assignments to receive make-up points.
TARDIES
Students
are expected to be in their respective locker rooms by the time the bell has rung.
If students are not inside the locker room by this time they will be marked
tardy. The first tardy is a warning, the second tardy results in a note or phone
call home, the third tardy is a mandatory detention, and the fourth tardy and
subsequent tardies thereafter result in automatic administrative referrals.
GRADING
Students
are given an average daily grade for each unit of study. In addition to the
average daily grade for each unit, student will also have homework and quizzes
throughout the year. The grading breakdown is as follows: average daily grade 80%,
homework 10%, and quizzes 10%.
CHANGING/ATTIRE
Students
will need to bring a change of clothes every day regardless of weather or unit
of study. The clothing/attire needs to be appropriate and keep in line with the
school’s dress code as defined in the student handbook. Examples of appropriate
clothing/attire are: athletic shorts/pants, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. The
follow items will result in an automatic no dress: jeans, jean shorts, skirts,
dress, inappropriate clothing (low cut shorts/shirts, offensive
language/images, etc.), and any kind of shoe that is not appropriate to run in
(boots, sandals, slippers, clogs, etc.). Hats will not be worn in class, inside
or out. The only exception is a winter hat if we go snow shoeing or on hat
days.
***DISCIPLINE FOR
NOT CHANGING***
Students
are expected to change their clothes every single class. Every student gets two
free no-dress passes, provided they can still participate in the class
activities. For every no-dress after the first two they will lose 3 points off
their overall grade. These points can be made up by completing an article
review (a rubric will be provided). I will accept a summary to make up no more
than three extra no-dresses. If the regular clothes worn to school prevent the
student from participating in class, they must complete an article review to
receive credit for the missed class. All article reviews are due one week after
assigned.
HYGIENE
Through
the course of the year students will work up a sweat in class, hence the
importance of bringing a change of clothes. It is recommended that students
have multiple changes of clothes that are washed after each time worn. I also
recommend students bring deodorant/antiperspirant to be applied before and
after class.
LOCKERS AND LOCKS
It
is recommended that all students store their belongings in a locker. I will provide
locks to students who wish to use them. Lost locks will result in a $10 charge.
It is the student’s responsibility to protect their belongings, so please do
not leave items in the locker room between classes or overnight. I hate to say
it but theft will occur when the opportunity is given. The best way to prevent
theft or items going missing is to keep your belongings with you and to lock them
during class.
DOCTOR’S NOTES
A
doctor’s note is needed to excuse a student from changing for class. However,
if the doctor’s note indicates the student can participate on a limited basis
they will be required to change. If the doctor’s note completely excuses
participation the student will be given an alternate assignment (Journal Entry,
Book Report, Current Events in Sports, Health/Fitness Regimes, History of the
Games, etc…). This is strictly a participation grade. If your student is
participating in class (active or non-active) they will still have the
opportunity to obtain an “A” in P.E. class. Those with asthma can be active in
class but may need an inhaler, and those with inhalers must have a doctor’s
note on file in the office.
FITNESS TESTING
All
students will be required to take a pre and post-test on various components of
physical fitness. After the pre-test, student will make a goal for the post
test. The emphasis is placed of overall improvement not the score achieved.
FEATS OF PHYSICAL
FITNESS
To
showcase the athletic and fitness exploits of the students and faculty, there
will be a new bulletin board on the hallway outside of the gym. Students and
faculty are encouraged to bring in photos, or other items, of them
participating in any physical activity outside of school (not including school
sports teams). This can range from pictures of a student and family hiking, or
a copy of a certificate from a karate tournament. I encourage all students to
submit photos, since any photo submitted will find a place of the board. Also
on this board will be school records for various achievements in class: most
pushups, biggest improvement in sit ups scores, circus ball homerun hitters,
etc.
MISCELLANEOUS
Students
are recommended to bring in a reusable water bottle to allow for less wait time
at the water fountain.
Cell
phones are not allowed in class period. The first time I see a student with a
phone in class I will take it away until the end of class. If it happens again,
they will not be able to get it until the end of school. Every time afterwards
they will receive a detention and I will notify the parents.
Other
items prohibited in class: gum, electronic devices, rubber bands, pencils (I
will proved them as needed), and outside equipment unless otherwise
instructed/given permission beforehand.
